Paul Ariste memo to Uku Masing
In 1941, when Estonia was occupied by the Nazis, all the Jewish libraries were confiscated by the special group headed by Rosenberg. Most of the books were brought to Tartu university for sorting and sending the most valuables to Germany. Paul Ariste (who knew Yiddish) and Uku Masing (who knew Hebrew) were selected to help in this work. They managed to save some books and returned them later to their owners. Here Ariste writes to Masing in Yiddish in his usual half-serious tone: "Mr Masing. This is a duplicate [book] that I already have. You can have it. P. Ariste. With my best wishes and [have] a good day.
