"Juudi kirik" - (Jewish church) - house that was used as a praying house in Kuressaare (Saaremaa). The picture from 1998.
"Old inhabitants of Kuressaare remember that this house at Pikk str. 14 was known as "Jewish church". The house belonged to Mendel and Malka Grünhut, the latvian Jews who moved to Kuressaare. Mendel Grünhut was a merchant, who was making and selling hats. The few Jews of Kuressaare gathered in this house for prayer - this explains the name of the house - "the Jewish church". After the death of parents, their children Sara, Beile-Sonja, Ruven and Henny sold the house to the wife of the youngest son of the known Kuressaare merchant Bergman...."
Translated from Luule Piibur article in "Meie Maa" (1996), Nr.52, April 4, p.7

Mendel Grünhut lived from 1868 till 1933. The house was totally renovated in 1960's and made "simpler". The picture is from the Saarema museum.
